Ultimate Fish Tacos

Ultimate Fish Tacos

Ultimate Fish Tacos are the bomb!  They are very very simple to make, and they are delicious.  The fillets cook up quickly in a skillet on the stove and they use a taco seasoning packet to create the flavor.  To bring these tacos to the next level, I serve them with a Flavorful Taco Slaw.  If you’re not a big fan of fish, I can help you with that too!  Read on.

Eliminate or Reduce Fishy Flavor

I do not like fishy tasting fish.  Fresh fish has a wonderful flavor and if your fish in the freezer is less than about 6 months old, there is one little trick you can do that can make your fish taste fresh without a fishy flavor.  And the best part, it also will eliminate the fish odor in your home when you cook the fish.  If your fish has been frozen for over 6 months or so, it will reduce the fishiness, but it will not eliminate it.

The trick….. soak your thawed fish fillets in milk.  Put your fillets in a bowl with a lid and pour milk in until the fillets are completely covered.  Let the soak overnight or all day or even a couple of hours.  It’s not a marinade so it’s not going to affect the texture of your fillets.  It’s just a soak.  The milk bonds to whatever creates the fishiness in fish.  After soaking the fish, dispose of the milk, pat the fillets dry, and cook your fish like you always do.  The longer the soak the less fishy.  This works on all types of fish.

When I prepare fish that have been frozen, I always soak them in milk first.  Otherwise, I just don’t like the fish.

Ingredients

The ingredients to the fish tacos is super simple.  The list of ingredients is short.  It is fish fillets that are free of bones, taco seasoning, a little bit of lime juice, and water.

Cooking

To cook the fillets, put olive oil in a saucepan and heat the olive oil.  Add the fillets in a single layer and fry them until the outer edges of the fillets are turning white.  Flip them, and fry until the fillets put apart easily with a fork.  But don’t pull them apart just yet.  Drain the oil and any other juices that are in the pan.  Then using two forks pull each fillet apart into bite sized pieces.  Just like you would if you were shredding pork.

Reduce your stove heat to low and add the taco seasoning, lime juice, and the water to your shredded fillets.  Stir until the taco seasoning is fully mixed and the spices from the taco seasoning are tender.

Serving

To serve your Ultimate Fish Tacos place a scoop of the taco meat onto a tortilla shell, top with Flavorful Taco Slaw, shredded cheese, and chopped cilantro.  I like to use Queso shredded cheese, but any type will work.  You can add any other taco toppings that you would enjoy too.

Do you need idea for a side dish to serve with your Ultimate Fish Tacos?  Chili Lime Sweet Corn is so good with them!  Give them a try today!

Happy Cooking!
