Tater Tot Casserole is a Family Favorite!

Tater Tot Casserole

Tater Tot Casserole is a family favorite at our house, and it has been for many years.  It’s a family recipe that is loved by many for weeknight meals or for a family gathering.  If you are a meat, vegetables, and potatoes kind of family, then this recipe is for you.

This recipe has very simple ingredients that is easy to prepare.  Each ingredient gets layered into the baking dish.  There is no slicing or dicing with this recipe, making it quick to assemble.

Ingredients

This recipe has very simple ingredients that you can keep on hand.

There is ground beef that is browned and drained.  I use this type of meat masher.  I love it for browning and crumbling ground beef!  Put the meat in a greased 8×8 inch baking pan.  Seasoned with onion flakes and seasoned salt.  Canned French cut green beans are the vegetable that is layered on top of the seasoned meat.  Then topped with creamy cream of potato soup.  Tater tots top it off in nice, neat little rows.

Baking

It gets baked uncovered for 45 minutes.  Since most of the ingredients are either heated or room temperature this cooks up pretty quickly.  It’s mainly to heat up the tater tots and crisp them up.

Once it is finished remove it from the oven and you can serve it immediately.

Serving

My favorite side to serve with Tater Tot Casserole is warm buttered French bread.  I also like to serve a fruity type of salad such as Caramel Apple Cheesecake Salad or Creamy Grape Salad.

Great Things to Know!

  • If your family prefers canned corn or peas, they are a great substitute for the French cut beans.
  • You can substitute anyone of the many different condensed cream soups for the cream of potato soup.
  • This recipe can be assembled and frozen to be thawed and baked at a later date.  Just put it in the fridge to thaw a couple of days before you plan to bake it.
  • You can double the recipe and bake it in a 9×13 glass baking pan.  Bake it uncovered in a preheat 350-degree oven for 45 minutes.
  • It can be made in the microwave.  You will need a pan that fits in your microwave.  Cover with waxed paper and microwave it in 5-7 minute increments until the tater tots are thawed.  It’s usually about 15-20 minutes depending on the power of your microwave.  Do not stir it between cooking times.  Just know that the tater tots do not get as crispy as in the oven.
  • You can make and assemble this casserole a day or more in advance of when you want to bake it.  Just keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to bake it.  Bake it for 45 minutes in a preheated 350-degree oven.

Happy Cooking!

Equipment

  • 1 8x8 Baking Pan
  • 1 Medium saucepan
  • 1 Masher

Ingredients

  • 1 Lb Ground Beef
  • 1 14.5 oz French Cut Green Beans
  • 1 can Condensed Cream of Potato Soup
  • 16 oz Tater Tots Frozen
  • ½ tsp Dried Onion Flakes
  • ½ tsp Seasoned Salt

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat brown ground beef and drain.
  • Grease the 8x8 inch baking pan.
  • Put browned ground beef in the baking pan and spread it out evenly.
  • Sprinkle onion flakes and the seasoned salt over the ground beef.
  • Partially drain a can of french cut green beans. You want a little liquid to help prevent the casserole from sticking onto the baking pan. Spread the green beans evenly over the ground beef.
  • Next spread the can of cream of potato soup over the green beans. It's OK if it's not spread perfectly. It will spread more as it cooks.
  • Place tater tots on top of the soup laying them in neat rows.
  • Put the casserole in the oven and bake uncovered for 45 minutes.
  • Serve immediately.
