Sweet Tangy Barbeque Meatballs

Barbeque Meatballs

Sweet Tangy Barbeque Meatballs are a scrumptious combination!  This recipe has simple ingredients and create a fantastic combination of flavors that will become your next family favorite, even for the most finicky eaters.

One of the great things about this recipe is that the meatballs do not require prebaking.  You can make them and put them in the oven and forget about them the timer goes.  This allows me time to do something else while it bakes.

A single batch with 1 pond of ground beef works great in an 8×8 inch baking pan.  A double batch with 2 pounds of ground beef fits perfectly in a 9×13 baking pan.

Ingredients

I recommend using an 80% lean or better ground beef since the grease does not get drained.  The recipe is for two types of crackers, saltines and Ritz crackers.  They are the filler in this recipe.   It calls for eggs and milk.  The meat mixture does seem a little bit thin when you mix it and shape it into the meatballs, but everything holds together nicely when the baking to create a very moist flavorful meatball.

The sauce is made up of ketchup, brown sugar, water and ground nutmeg.  The nutmeg seems like an odd ingredient.  It seems like it belongs in a fall baking recipe.  Trust me, it does not taste like a fall baking recipe, and you will not realize there is nutmeg in these Sweet Tangy Barbeque Meatballs.  So, you mix the barbeque sauce ingredients together and pour it over the meatballs.

Baking

This is the perfect recipe to make with baked potatoes.  You can prepare the baked potatoes first and get them going in the oven.  Then I put the Barbeque Meatballs together.  I usually wrap the medium sized potatoes in foil and bake them in a preheated oven at 350 degrees and bake them for 1 hour.  Longer if the potatoes are larger or cold from the refrigerator.

You will bake the meatballs uncovered for about 45 minutes or until they are done.   Then they are ready to serve.

Serving

As I’ve mentioned, I like to serve these with baked potatoes.  Cranberry Almond Green Beans is the perfect stovetop vegetable to serve with this meal.  Red, White and Blueberry Fluff would taste great little something special with this too.

Happy Cooking!
