Simply Delicious Sloppy Joe Maidrite or Tavern Sandwiches are simply delicious.  They are all made with ground beef and have a tomato type sauce on them.  They are all very similar, yet they are all slightly different.  Whatever you want to call it, they are a quick and simple sandwich that is very delicious.

It’s a great hot sandwich for a crowd.  These sandwiches can be made ahead of time and reheated in a slow cooker.  It can be convenient for your family or if you are feeding many people.  The best part, it’s an easy way to feed a lot of people for less money.

The Ingredients

This recipe is made with standard household ingredients.  Ground Beef, onion, ketchup, mustard, chili powder, brown sugar, and salt and pepper to taste.

The easiest and quickest way to cook this is with thawed ground beef, but frozen ground beef can be used.  It will just take a lot longer to cook.  You can use any percent lean ground beef.

The onion is optional.  I have substituted dried onion flakes and I have totally skipped it.

the remaining ingredients are super simple.  They create a type of barbeque sauce for the flavoring of the meat.

Cooking

In a medium saucepan put the ground beef and sliced onions.  Brown the two together.  After the ground beef is browned and crumbled, drain off the excess fat.

Add water, ketchup, mustard, chili powder, brown sugar and salt and pepper the mixture to suit your tastes.  Lastly, stir it up and put the lid on an continue cooking over low heat until everything is heated up.

Serving

When I was a kid, these were served at school and at home in Iowa.  We called them Tavern Buns.  They were served on a bun and topped with a slice of cheddar cheese and dill pickles.

Simply Delicious Sloppy Joe Maidrite or Tavern Sandwiches are best served with potatoes chips and baked beans or Potato Salad, and Chili Lime Sweet CornStrawberry Fluff salad or Caramel Apple Cheesecake Salad goes great with it too.

When you have your next event that you want some fast, easy, and cost effective keep this in mind.

Happy Cooking!
