Why I Buy Spinach Instead of Lettuce (And My Easy Hack for Freezing Spinach)
Lately, Iโve been reaching for spinach instead of lettuce when planning salads and quick meals. Spinach feels like the overachiever of greensโitโs hearty enough to hold up in a salad, yet versatile enough to sneak into just about any recipe. Unlike lettuce, which wilts and spoils quickly, spinach keeps longer, and the best part? With a simple kitchen hack for freezing spinach, you can easily store it to use later in soups, skillets, pasta, casseroles, and more!
Freezing spinach is one of my favorite kitchen tricks because itโs fast, easy, and eliminates waste. I donโt bother blanching or doing extra prep. I just place fresh spinach into a resealable freezer bag, press out the air, and pop it into the freezer. Once frozen, the leaves become brittle, so I can gently crush or squeeze the bag to break them into smaller pieces. This makes it simple to grab a handful whenever I need it without worrying about washing, chopping, or prepping.
Here are some of my favorite recipes where frozen spinach shines:
- Spinach Mashed Potatoes โ Creamy mashed potatoes with a pop of green.
- Creamy Spinach Orzo Pasta โ A cheesy, one-pot side dish ready in under 30 minutes.
- Easy Skillet Pierogies & Sausage โ A quick, flavor-packed weeknight dinner.
- Spinach and Cheese Egg Bake โ A hearty, satisfying brunch dish with melty cheese and eggs.
- Pasta Casserole with Spinach โ Comfort food that combines pasta and spinach in a creamy casserole.
Because frozen spinach is so versatile, I often plan meals around it. I keep a bag or two in the freezer at all times, and itโs amazing how it can be added directly into dishes with minimal fuss. It adds color, flavor, and nutrients to almost any meal, from weeknight dinners to quick lunches or even simple omelets.
Tips for Using Frozen Spinach
Here are some of my top tips to get the most out of your frozen spinach:
- Use directly from the freezer โ Thereโs no need to thaw before cooking. Toss it straight into soups, skillets, pasta sauces, casseroles, or scrambled eggs.
- No added moisture โ Because this freezing method doesnโt require blanching or water, the spinach stays dry. You can add it directly to recipes without worrying about excess liquid.
- Boost flavor โ Frozen spinach is perfect for mixing with garlic, butter, herbs, or cheese. It soaks up flavor quickly and enhances your dish effortlessly.
- Batch cooking โ Keep multiple bags of frozen spinach on hand. Itโs a lifesaver for meal prep, weeknight dinners, or when youโre short on fresh produce.
Spinach really is the multitasking green every kitchen needsโfresh, frozen, and always ready to make meals more wholesome and delicious. Whether youโre stirring it into a pasta dish, or sneaking it into mashed potatoes for extra nutrients, having frozen spinach on hand makes cooking simpler, faster, and more creative.
